The Depression Years

by Marion L. Hopfer

This was a period of time not to be forgotten by those who lived through those frugal years. A time of hopelessness, scraping, stretching, sacrificing, and making do with what you had.

I do remember people shared and did what they could to help a friend, relative, or neighbor. Many people were evicted from their homes because they could not pay the rent. Newly married couples had to move in with parents, so families doubled up. Unfinished attics were used and ceilings and walls were covered with flattened cardboard boxes to keep out the elements. Some people even rented cots in the cellar in over crowded houses. Some people built shacks in the woods. Many coal miners did this. Many of these are still standing today. Many people converted there home into boarding houses with room and board.
