Then of course there were the Veterans who fought in the First World War. The government was holding their bonuses for years ahead, but the veterans were in desperate need of it now. They were out of work and their families were hungary, so they began to march to Washington. They were called the Bonus Army. They came from all over the country. Some hitch hiked, some rode the freight trains, some drove in broken down old autos, or horse drawn carts. There were more than 20 thousand veterans that marched. They stopped here and camped at Ideal Park. People gave to them what they could spare in food, clothes, or blankets. They camped in Washington, but they were chased away and didn’t get their bonuses. This was a sad disgrace for our country.
